How to ask questions about a YouTube video
This site has no chatbot of its own. It gives you the transcript, which is what any AI needs to “understand” a video:
- Paste the video link above and press Get Free Transcript.
- Keep timestamps on so the AI can tell you where in the video each answer comes from.
- Press Copy, then open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
- Paste the starter prompt below, then the transcript, and send.
- Ask your questions in the same conversation. Click a timestamp in our transcript to check the answer in the video.
Why the transcript makes AI chat with YouTube videos reliable
AI assistants cannot watch a video the way you do. Given only a link, they may not be able to open it and can end up guessing from the title. With the full transcript in the conversation, the AI can quote, find and explain exactly what the speaker said, and you can hold it to that.
Tell the AI to answer only from the transcript and to say “not covered in the video” when it cannot find something. That one instruction removes most made-up answers.
What to ask an AI about a YouTube video
- Where does the speaker explain a specific idea, and what exactly do they say?
- What are the main arguments, and which ones are backed by evidence?
- Explain a confusing part in simpler words, or with an example.
- What tools, books, products or people are mentioned?
- How does this video compare with another one? Paste both transcripts.
- What would a critic of this view say?
An AI YouTube assistant without another account
Dedicated “chat with YouTube” tools usually do the same thing: fetch the transcript and send it to a language model. Doing it yourself costs nothing extra, works with whichever assistant you already use, and keeps the transcript in your hands. You can also download it as TXT or Markdown and upload it as a file to AI tools that accept attachments.
Prompts to use with the transcript
-
I am going to paste the transcript of a YouTube video. Answer my questions using only this transcript. Include the timestamp for each answer, and say “not covered in the video” if the answer is not there. Reply “Ready” when you have read it. -
Read this transcript and list 10 good questions I could ask about the video, then wait for me to choose one. -
Where in this video does the speaker talk about [topic]? Quote the relevant lines with their timestamps. -
Explain the part of this video around [timestamp] in simpler terms, with an example. -
What evidence does the speaker give for their main claim? Which points are opinion rather than fact? -
List every product, tool, book, website and person mentioned in this video, with the timestamp of each mention. -
Act as a skeptical expert. What are the weakest points in this video’s argument, and what is missing? -
I will paste two transcripts. Compare the two videos: where they agree, where they disagree, and which explains [topic] better.
Frequently asked questions
How do I chat with a YouTube video?
Get the transcript here, paste it into an AI assistant with the starter prompt above, and ask questions in the same conversation.
Can I chat with a YouTube video for free?
Yes. The transcript is free with no sign-up, and the free plans of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are enough for most videos.
Does this site have its own AI chat?
No. We provide the transcript and prompts, and you use the AI assistant you prefer.
Why not just give the AI the link?
Many assistants cannot reliably open a YouTube link and read what was said. The transcript gives them the exact words, so answers are grounded and checkable.
What if the video is very long?
Paste the transcript in parts, telling the AI to wait until you say you have finished, or upload the downloaded TXT file if your assistant accepts files.
Which videos work?
Any video with captions, either creator subtitles or YouTube’s automatic captions. Videos without any captions cannot be used.
